Summer Creative Writing Courses for Middle School, High School and adults

Creative Writing Courses

We use words every day for work and school to think, read, and communicate with each other. Sometimes we forget that words can be playful and fun! Creative writing unleashes the imagination— something we are often asked to curb at school and work. In workshops, students are encouraged to engage their imagination, their most valuable writing tool. Through activities that nurture creative expression, students learn to play with words and follow streams of thought into new landscapes. When students begin to connect language with spontaneous play, writing becomes a joy— empowering.

STARS is pleased to offer a summer intensive writing program. One of our STARS tutors, Heather Woods, who is an experienced writing teacher, published author, and literary editor, will be offering multiple creative writing workshops this summer.

What is a writing workshop?

A writing workshop is a class where students study celebrated writers and experiment with writing exercises and peer editing in order to improve their own craft. Unlike the traditional lecture format, writing workshops are based much more on student discussion, group activities, and participation. Students are taught how to read and respond to each other's writing.  This intensive focus on peer editing helps students build self-editing skills, and learn the vocabulary and basic elements of their craft. Perhaps most importantly, students have an opportunity to share their writing with their peers and feel that their creative voice is heard. Thoughtful peer response is an essential tool in developing a healthy writing process and a validating, enlivening experience for writers of all ages.

Courses will be organized by age group: the class for 4th and 5th grade will be held July 11th and 12th from 12-3pm, the class for middle school will be held July 16th and 17th from 12-3pm, the class for high school will be held July 23rd and 24th from 4-7pm, and an adult course for college and beyond will be held August 6th, 7th and 8th from 5-7. The cost for the course is $325, which includes all course literature and materials. Heather is also able to offer individualized instruction in writing and literature if these class times don’t fit your summer schedule. If you would like to sign up for any of these courses, or if you have any questions, please email us at by June 25th.
